Avengers #679

NO SURRENDER pt V

Written by Al Ewing, Jim Zub, and Mark WaidPenciled by Kim JacintoCover by Mark BrooksPublished Feb 7, 2018

The Challenger stares down the Grandmaster, seething. There's been a development as a Human has managed to get to the pyramoid. Back at the scene, Lightning shudders as Captain Glory and Ferene salute the Avengers, awarding them a point. The two parties put off destroying them while Synapse explains to her teammates that Johnny Storm is gone.

Point: Humans.

Red Hulk tries to console Lightning and asks Falcon to do the same, but he blames himself for Torch's death and sprints back to Rogue to deliver the bad news. Meanwhile, Beast and Wasp continue monitoring Jarvis. They speculate that his illness may be related to constant exposure to radiation the Avengers brought back into the mansion.    Back in Rome, Rogue tries to rally her team when Lightning appears to break the news. Meanwhile we see Torch floating in suspended animation with Black Dwarf behind him. They're trapped above the gameboard while the Grandmaster gives props to their terrain, and the winner of many galactic battles it's been. Suddenly the Challenger has had enough and we find out more about their past.

The old crew.

They were once elders of the last survivors, and almost like brothers. The games started out simple, but the stakes got bigger. Finally, the Challenger lost and was exiled from existence. He waited and one day returned. Now, full of rage, he's finally winning. For their next move, the Challenger picks air. Grandmaster picks ice, later seeming confident that his opponent is a man down in the game. But the Challenger reveals he has an ace in the hole. What that is, we'll have to wait for however, as this issue is left to be continued.

Challenger's got moves you don't even know yet.

For such a publishing schedule, this series still leaves it all on the page. While Kim Jacinto has some serious footsteps to follow up from the great Pepe Larraz, it's still more than adequate and helps to further a still amazing storyline. I'm loving what they're doing here and can't wait to see what's next. I give this one a 9/10.
