As a boy, Wade Wilson grew up idolize Captain America. The day he asked him to become an Avenger truly was a dream come true. It's a different world now that Cap is back. He radios Deadpool to tell him there's a top secret mission. A sensitive location was breached. He needs Deadpool to find Agent Coulson of SHIELD. When he joined the squad, he was taking Wolverine's spot. He knew there would be missions that required a certain kind of depravity and this might just be one of them.
I mean, it's Captain America. NOTHING could be wrong with an order from him. Right? |
He stops by Preston's house - who just happens to be having a family barbeque, where Coulson's safe house is. She refuses to tell but Wade dangles a deal that might be too good to pass up. He won't bother her or her family the entire rest of the summer. Meanwhile, Agent Phil Coulson transmits a blind message to whomever will receive it. Saying he grew up idolize get Cap as well, he realized some time in the near future that something wasn't right. He didn't leave much of a trail, but Coulson knows he is working some type of angle with the alien race, the Chitari. As he races to sound the alarm, Deadpool fires a rocket and knocks his flying classic fastback Lola out of the sky. He repeats that Steve Rogers is compromised. He broadcasts his last position.
Great! The world's first flying car and you screw it up! |
Realizing that Deadpool is there assassin, he realizes he won't win any battles. Asking for a truce, he guises that there is zero negotiating with the killer. The only strategy to survive is to evade. He wonders if they were in opposite circumstances, would it be any different? An explosive he planted detonates. Coulson is looking for a safe room he has in the area. A former hideout of old pal Nick Fury's. If he can reach it, he can get help. How the hell Deadpool knew anything about it reveals Preston is a leaker. This entire situation proves that Cap isn't himself and it breaks his heart. Coulson would die for Captain America but he knows Deadpool would just as easily kill for him. He sprays the room with bullets but misses as the SHIELD agent gets behind a door and slams the mercs arm in it.
"You're on the wrong side this time, Deadpool" he says. Deadpool asks "Ask yourself - has anybody ever said that about Captain America and been RIGHT?!". Coulson could have stopped Cap but failed. He now pays for that failure with his life, as Deadpool gets a pistol through the crack and fires it into his chest.
You killed the wrong guy! |
Deadpool relaxes against the wall. A flashback recaps the mission. Captain America tells him he needs him to kill Agent Coulson on sight - for the good of the country. Deadpool says he understands. Now with the safe room location safely in flames, he walks out and asks Cap if he gets to know what this is all about. He answers yes, but not tonight. It was a necessary sacrifice. Wade worries about Preston but Cap tells him she'll understand soon enough. There's gonna be some changes in this country. "It's time to water the tree of liberty..." he says.. And Wade stares into a cracked window wondering exactly what the hell he just did.
Hey! Look at what I just did for you! |
It's not easy to not go for low blows in this book. Anytime they're able to approach something seriously is like a special treat. This is one of those times where this title doesn't miss. An amazing book from cover to end, I hope we haven't seen the end for Coulson. But as we now know, there's no end to how crazy the things Captain America will go to. It's gonna be fun to find out though. I give this one a 9/10.
