Star Wars #56

THE ESCAPE pt I

Written by Kieron Gillen
Penciled by Sandrea Broccardo
Published Nov 7, 2018

Han and company have once again crossed paths with ex-wife and fellow smuggler Sana Starros. She's able to conceal the wanted rebels for a bit, but eventually luck runs out and they're forced to abandon ship. With Chewy and the Millennium Falcon still adrift, they need to book it back, but will the make it in time? Kieron Gillen still proves he's the master of all things Star Wars. Plus with an all new arc to play with, it's clear Luke and his friends are still in pretty safe hands. I give this one a 9/10.

Immortal Hulk #8

HIS HIDEOUS HEART

Written by Al Ewing
Penciled by Joe Bennett
Published Nov 7, 2018

Fresh off his showdown with the Avengers, the Hulk sits now dismembered in a mad scientists' lab. But while Alpha Flight searches for him, the green monster makes it painfully clear that he isn't so easily stopped. Al Ewing continues what has to be the scariest Incredible Hulk iteration I think I've ever read. That combined with Joe Bennett's artwork, and this book still continues to impress. I give it a 10/10.

Deadpool #6

Written by Skottie Young
Penciled by Scott Hepburn
Published Nov 7, 2018

One of Wade's old frenemies is back in town, but with every attempt to end the merc with a mouth, he's interrupted. Thanks to the Fantastic Four, various aliens, and even Dr. Strange, the mysterious villain known as Killpuddle has had enough of Deadpool taking his shtick. But will he be able to end the always quick witted assassin? Don't count on it. I give this super-quick read an 8/10.

Champions #26

WARRIORS OF THE WEIRD pt II

Written by Jim Zub
Penciled by Max Dunbar
Published Nov 7, 2018

Part 2 of the Champions descent into Weirdworld, this issue finds the team with scattered memories and new personas - but at the very least, Riri Williams is still aware of who they are. With help from the Man-Thing as well as the Master, they battle against the Swamp Queen. The issue ends with Ms. Marvel using Dr. Strange like powers to giant size Snow... gore. Confused? Yeah - me too. But at least Jim Zub isn't afraid to shake the tree every now and again. I give this one a 7/10.

X-Men Black: Emma Frost #1

HUNGER IS PRODUCTIVE

Written by Leah Williams
Penciled by Chris Bachalo
Published Oct 31, 2018

I'm beginning to understand what this series is. While it took until the final issue to dawn on me, this is a bridge from X-Men Gold, Blue, etc.. to the new Uncanny X-Men. Basically it's setting all the major X-foes back to zero. Emma Frost decides to recruit the X-Men to help her destroy the Hellfire Club. They agree, but eventually it just turns into her assassinating Sebastian Shaw to rule in his place as the new Black King. It's a little hokey but was probably the first in this series to tell a complete story that actually needed to be told. Not bad, but it unfortunately ruins this week's perfect streak. I give this one an 8/10.

Tony Stark: Iron Man #5

SELF MADE MAN pt V

Written by Dan Slott
Penciled by Max Dunbar
Published Oct 31, 2018

I can't get over what Dan Slott brings to a series. My initial fear of losing him from Amazing Spider-Man has officially been transferred to the joy by what he's done with this book. Not taking away anything from Brian Michael Bendis, but it seems like Slott was meant for this series. As part of the continuing "Self-Made Man" arc, we get a peek into the life of still newly discovered Stark brother Arno, and what he's able to bring to the family's legacy. Problem for Tony though - the issue ends with his sibling dining with Sunset Bain, which could spell any number of troubles for the Avenger. This book keeps the winning streak going for this week with another 10/10.

Old Man Logan #50

THE KING OF NOTHING finale

Written by Ed Brisson
Penciled by Ibraim Roberson
Published Oct 31, 2018

So lucky for us, Ed Brisson truly saved some of his best for this series' last. Logan squares off with the Maestro one last time, and thanks to the Regenix is able to finally get the best of the Hulk. This time, he slices the green monster's head clean off. Only bad part is that the issue ends with Logan laying dead in the snow. The series continues in the Dead Man Logan limited series, and has me excited to see the last chapter in the original berserker's life. I give this one too a 10/10.

Daredevil #610

THE DEATH OF DAREDEVIL pt II

Written by Charles Soule
Penciled by Phil Noto
Published Oct 31, 2018

Oh man... So at this point, I'm pretty sure Charles Soule is clearly the best writer Marvel has. What started as an Elektra reunion just serves to remind us how hot and cold she is. After quickly recruiting her to help kidnap Kingpin disciple James Wesley, the team once again encounters silent and deadly assassin, the Vigil. But after Daredevil saves him from his former girlfriend, blood is shed, and Elektra walks away. Amazing story that keeps getting better, I give this one a 10/10.

X-Men Red #9

THE HATE MACHINE pt IX

Written by Tom Taylor
Penciled by Roge Antonio
Published Oct 24, 2018

The showdown continues with Cassandra Nova... still. 9 Months after it began. But for everything I've pointed out that I thought X-Men Red has gotten wrong, I have to give this one credit. Because this truly feels like the classic books Tom Taylor works so hard to emulate. Whether it's young romance, aka Gentle and Trinary - or old romance between Nightcrawler and Rachel Summers, this book manages to introduce a big problem and mostly saves it by the end. This storyline is starting to get a little stale, but next to X-Men Black - it looks a lot better than it's been. I give this one a 9/10.

X-Men Black: Juggernaut #1

STOPPABLE

Written by Robbie Thompson
Penciled by Shawn Crystal
Published Oct 24, 2018

Like the issue before it, and probably after it - I still don't understand X-Men Black. Marvel really dangled the carrot with the Magneto book coming with a Chris Claremont writing credit, but short of that - what is this about? I guess I'm glad we get a one shot story about Juggernaut, plus another chapter of this pointless Apocalypse story.. but still, you could skip this series and not miss anything. The good thing about it all is that the Emma Frost book comes next and mercilessly ends it. What will we learn next week? Nothing but how to throw $4.99 away really fast and for no reason. I give this one a 5/10.
