Uncanny X-Men #9

Written by Cullen Bunn
Penciled by Ken Lashley
Cover by Greg Land
Published Jun 29, 2016

Magneto sits alone in his cell when the voice of a familiar friend comes to taunt him. Warren Worthington's facade fades into the image of Mystique and in their conversation, we learn Erik hired both her and Fantomex in case things went south in Green Ridge. They hear screaming and after doing some investigating, find the congregation harvesting bits of Warren's wings from him and letting them grow into a macabre army of archangels. After intervening, Warren tells them it's all he can do to try and stop the madness and evil that's a part of his body. Magneto labels him a traitor but responding to the threats, Apocalypse's son Genocide appears... telling Magneto to back off.
Back in the sewers, Sabretooth and Callisto battle Monet's brother Emplate who's been feeding on the Morlock's since the terrigen mists have been decimating the mutant population. After incapacitating the others, we learn in a conversation between the siblings that Emplate lived for years as a parasite to his sister. Monet agrees to stay with her brother forever, in exchange for leaving all mutants alone in the future as well as freeing the ones he has been feeding on. Whether the monster agrees to it hinges on the next issue.
It still ends on a cliffhanger however as Mystique takes Warren in her arms and threatens to kill him to stop Genocide from assembling his army. It sadly appears they're too late. Betsy's telepathic call to the Archangel in the previous issue fulfills the prophecy they'd foreseen all along. Throngs of archangel clones descend upon Green Ridge, poisoning Psylocke and symbolizing to the people that the apocalypse is here. And now they're all in big, big trouble.
Good issue. I always forget the link between Apocalypse and Warren Worthington going all the way back to the X-Factor days. Good to know Cullen Bunn sticks to his history. Great story. I give it a 9/10.

All New Wolverine #10

Written by Tom Taylor
Penciled by Ig Guara
Cover by Bengal
Published Jul 20, 2016

Ulysses sits in his quarters under observation by Carol Danvers. He awakens with a new prophecy, only this time it involves both the X-Man formerly known as Wolverine and the one still going by that name. Meanwhile back in New York, Logan wakes up on Laura's couch. Clearly disoriented, he finds himself tied to the furniture with Gabby and Jonathan the real, actual wolverine staring at him. Laura comes in and unties him just in time for them to engage a few burglars whom they make quick work of.
Afterwards Logan and Laura have a conversation. Logan has always knew he screwed up when he tried to raise her. Coming back from his dystopian future gives him one more chance to screw it all up. He tries to discuss Gabby but Laura stops him. Suddenly her phone rings and it's Maria Hill. She tells him that a team is on the way. Logan realizes they're being boxed in and pops out the window to see Captain America and a SHIELD team. Maria tells Laura they think Logan is there to kill Gabby, and with that, the issue ends.
This is still probably the worst book I'm reading in the Marvel universe. It's like a trainwreck at this point and I can't look away. I give it a 5/10.

Uncanny Inhumans #11

Written by Charles Soule
Penciled by Carlos Pacheco

Published Jun 29, 2016

Tony Stark has taken Ulysses. Now it's time for the Inhumans to respond. How that will be is part of a rather controversial decision. After meeting with the Ultimates, Karnak feels like a show of force is the answer. But like her sister Crystal agrees, Medusa explains to them that goodwill with the humans would be tough to maintain if they scare them like that. While she'll work directly with Captain Marvel to get their Inhuman back, she charges Iso and Karnak with a plan to retaliate against Stark... personally. Not business.
Mosaic invades the body of one of Stark's accountants, transferring millions of dollars out of his accounts. Grid invades the electronic filing system, getting past Stark's AI Friday and downloading all of his personal emails and records. Lockjaw breaks into one of his vehicle warehouses, deploying several explosive devices and blowing up the building. Friday finally tracks him down and lets him know. Tony's reaction is surprising... He tells Friday to send a message back to Medusa with a simple "Message Received." As they watch house after house, email leak after leak, and institution of Stark's fall, they know he'll have all the money in the world again almost instantly.
The issue ends with Triton contacting Maximus the Maker. He explains that he's a good soldier and goes along with his orders almost always. Maximus tells him he's known as Maximus The Mad sometimes and with reason. Back in New Attilion, Karnak tells Medusa they've achieved all objectives that were laid out. Medusa tells him that their reasoning is that they're not monsters.. and as they're having the conversation, Stark Tower explodes and crumbles to the ground.
I'm enjoying some of these side issues to accompany the Civil War series. Uncanny Inhumans isn't the "new" X-Men for nothing, and they're going out of their way to prove it. I give this issue a 9/10.

All New All Different Avengers #11

Written by Mark Waid
Penciled by Mahmud Asrar
Cover by Alex Ross
Published Jun 29, 2016

Still trapped in the Negative Zone, Ms Marvel, Nova, and Spider-Man try to hatch a plan to escape Annihilus' prison - the only problem is that none of the other prisoners speak English. Not far from there, Iron Man and Captain ...Falcon America find themselves dragging a weakened and solar deprived Vision across the alien planet's surface while Thor goes toe-to-toe with Annihilus for what seems like hours. They discover his plan to build a weapon and destroy worlds (which is really such an old school kind of Avengers fight when you really think about it).
Tired of waiting for Nova to get out of his funk, Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel create a diversion and the trio escapes their captors using powers that the enslavers haven't accounted for yet. Elsewhere, Thor continues fighting the giant insect in vain until Falcon and Iron Man arrive to help out. It leaps at Iron Man when he realizes Annihilus is wearing a nega-band, using it to open a portal into the Avengers universe. He tells the others to retrieve it at all costs, and after modifying Nova's helmet to absorb the planet's energy, puts it on Vision who is able to tear Annihilus's hand off with the band. They use it to open a portal and order all the prisoners in the Negative Zone back onto the enemy planet they originally found themselves on.
After they arrive, Vision returns the helmet to Nova. They start working on a plan to return to eartth's surface when Falcon America makes a horrifying discovery. There's one Avenger not accounted for...Spider-Man lays at the feet of a handless Annihilus still in the Negative Zone. How will they return there to free him? We'll have to wait till the next issue to find out.
The Avengers are a legendary, old school team and as such, it's only natural they'd face an old school villain every now and again. Seeing Annihilus after so long is a great change of pace. Good story akin to the classic Fantastic Fours and Silver Surfers of yesteryear. Looking forward to what happens next. I give it a 9/10.

Extraordinary X-Men #11

Written by Jeff Lemire
Penciled by Humberto Ramos
Cover by Humberto Ramos
Published Jun 29, 2016

The issue opens fresh off the heels of the previous one, with a swallowed Logan being manipulated by one of the four horsemen of apocalypse in this plain - Venom. Jean Gray dives into Logan's psyche to try and coax him out, but is unsuccessful. The rest of the X-Men continue fighting as Nightcrawler bamfs he and Storm away and Iceman fights an even more demonic version of Deadpool than the real one, if that was even possible.
As the new mutants fight an energized horseman Colossus, a distressed Sapna in X-Haven writes a note to Illyana explaining the voices and nightmares in her head are a calling of sorts. She knows she's sick and she leaves, planning to come back once she's cured. Storm and Nightcrawler fights the horseman version of Moon Knight, defeating him and rising to meet the original profit of doom himself, a shriveled and weakened Apocalypse. He sits on a throne and tells them that his actual body is the Omega World these X-Men currently find themselves in. To destroy him means their deaths. He tells her he destroyed the embryos they seek and he intends to wipe out mutantkind, which is pretty much what he always says. This diatribe is interrupted by Nightcrawler, who bamfs his arm through the chest of Apocalypse. As he falls dead, the world they're in begins to crumble. Kurt asks what he's done and Storm tells him that he's doomed them all. With that, the story ends... to be concluded in the next issue.
Certainly a better class of X-Men than any of the other books, this is a great tale and reminds me of the good old Chris Claremont days. All the elements are there - from story telling and art, to plot twists and cliffhangers. As this book takes it's place as the flagship X-Title, it doesn't disappoint. I give it a 9/10.

Batman #11

Written by Tom King
Penciled by Mikel Janin
Cover by Mikel Janin
Published Nov 16, 2016
I Am Suicide pt 3
The issue opens with a flashback about when Batman captured Catwoman and had to turn her in, despite the fact that she killed 237 people. Flash to the present where Batman, Catwoman, and the Ventriloquist walk into the back of Block D of Bane's prison and go their separate ways. Next up we see Jewelee, her boyfriend Punchy, and Bronze Tiger in the front of the prison having an insane conversation. The 2 lovebirds keep pushing his buttons before the gate slides open and they walk inside. Bane will see them now.
Catwoman and Ventriloquist continue on inside. They talk about how Ventriloquist's doll Scarface more or less controls him and when he's not around, the criminal is able to stay out of trouble. Catwoman on the other hand, is never able to break from her demons. She explains that she's probably going to be executed for her crimes but her confession is broken up by them making it to the front of the block. The plan is to find the Psycho Pirate but Catwoman tells Ventriloquist to stay put and sneaks off to "cat around".
Finally the team is in place. Bronze Tiger meets with Bane and lies, telling him his gift is the 2 criminals in exchange for tips on how to kill Batman for the League of Assassins. The plan is quickly foiled though, by Catwoman, who jumps down and kills Punch and Jewelee and incapacitates Bronze Tiger. She makes a side deal with Bane - Money and a plane in exchange for how to break the Bat. With that, we're left to be continued.
Tom King is one of the best writers in the industry right now, and he's doing a stellar job with this already near classic tale. I Am Suicide is crushing it and Part 4 is certain to be another amazing chapter I'm already waiting for. I give this one a 10/10.

Spider-Man #5

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Penciled by Sara Pichelli
Cover by Sara Pichelli
Published Jun 29, 2016

Former X-Man Fabio Medina aka Goldballs is looking for a roommate, and asks Miles' best buddy Ganke if it's cool. He says it is and the two have a long conversation about how wrong it was for Ganke to give up Miles secret - that he's actually Spider-Man. The two of them see a video that a superfan made on YouTube of Spider-Man being captured. They freak out a little while until Ganke's phone rings. It's Miles' mom informing them that Miles isn't answering his phone. Ganke lies and buys them some time but it's clear that it isn't going to get them too far.
From there we see Ms. Morales having an argument with her mother, Miles' grandma. She's convinced he's on drugs or up to some kind of trouble, so she threatens to hire a private investigator. Back at Hammerhead's lair, the Black Cat checks for Miles' fingerprints but they get no hits. Suddenly Miles uses his super-secret power, where he can harness energy and make explosions (which I didn't know he could do either). He evades capture from Hammerhead and tracks down the Black Cat. They have a conversation where the new Spider-Man of New York flexes his muscles and tries to arrest her. But in the end, she explains she's the Black Cat and he's a little too new at this. He bags up the Hammerhead's crew and drops them off at the police station.
Miles' dad speaks with Maria Hill about getting him SHIELD protection, and he's apparently welcome back to return to the agency as we find out he's apparently a former field agent. Later we see Miles, Ganke, and Fabio having a conversation near the dorms about keeping superhero secrets. Ganke swears he'll never endanger his best friend's secret identity again, but it looks like there's gonna be some more trouble at home soon as Jessica Jones' camera snaps away... and with that we're left to be continued.
I wish this book was published a little more often. I know it's kind of a filler book and probably the bottom of the Bendis barrel, but it's still really damn good. Loved the banter between Black Cat and I'm looking forward to where it goes in the future. I give it a 9/10.

Uncanny X-Men #8

Written by Cullen Bunn
Penciled by Ken Lashley
Cover by Greg Land
Published Jun 15, 2016

Archangel remains in flux at War Room X in the Savage Land while a trapped Psylocke struggles to find Warren Worrhington, clearly being controlled by religious zealots in a hidden Akkaba city somewhere beneath Green Ridge, Colorado. She frees herself and happens upon a conversation between Warren and Genocide, Apocalypse's son, referencing how the serpents wear the scourge of deformity so that warren doesn't have to.  Her observation is interrupted however when Fantomex pops out of the shadows with a gun to her head.
Meanwhile in the tunnels beneath New York, Monet, Sabretooth and Callisto fight the servents of Emplate, Monet's brother. While his minions kidnap Morlock after Morlock, Emplate explains to them (in grosser terms than was probably necessary) that the entire ruse was done in an attempt to lure Monet to the tunnels to save him. Back in Green Ridge, Psylocke and Fantomex fight for their lives against each other. He believes he was hired to assassinate her, and seems to have no problems about doing so after their history. During their banter back and forth, it's revealed that supposedly Magneto hired him.
After defeating him soundly, she wanders around trying to find Erik. All the while, she's attempting to send a psychic signal to M and Sabretooth. They feel her tickling their brains, but can't pinpoint exactly what she's asking them for. Eventually she happens upon the frightening remains of several Archangel clones, and everything begins to make sense again. She calls out to the real Archangel, and he springs to life inside the Savage Land. He mindlessly flies to her aid while we're all left to be continued.
While the former flagship title has been reduced to a few b-list X-men like Sabretooth and Monet, this story still proves worth reading. I wish they'd have a little better creative team at the helm, vis a vis Extraordinary or All New X-men, but this whole Apocalypse tie in is still delivering. I give it a 7/10.

Uncanny Avengers #10

Written by Gerry Duggan
Penciled by Pepe Larraz
Cover by Ryan Stegman
Published Jun 22, 2016

Rogue and Hank Pym double team one of the monsters Shiklah decided to bring topside. After reminding them to never insult Ms. Deadpool, Hank asks Rogue for a night off for a date. She grants his wish and he flies off for a talk with his ex-wife, Janet Van Dyne aka the Wasp. Away from the team they discuss the time Hank's been away. Later confiding to Captain America, she discloses that this Hank is clearly an impostor and that Ultron is still very much in control of him.
Back at HQ, Human Torch and Cable talk about the future and whether Cable ever got any signs that Reed and Sue Richards are alive.  He says that he has not, and Hank walks in, overhearing their talk and jealous that the Avengers don't seem to remember their fallen like the Fantastic Four apparently does. Cable presses his buttons and tries to make him mad which is apparently one of Hank/Ultron's biggest flaws. Showing a chink in his armor, he has a coughing spell which eventually leads to him revealing to them what's been afoot all along. Ultron is still very much in control.
The building explodes, with Cap and the Wasp fearing they were too late. When the smoke clears, they see Deadpool, Cable, Human Torch, and Ultron about to throw down. Ultron asks Wasp where he went wrong and she tells him it was in missing key discussions during their conversation. She deploys a mini-EMP, allowing Deadpool to position himself over the incapacitated Ultron. Wasp tells him to fire while Cap tells him to hold it. The issue concludes with the blast emitting from Deadpool rifle and we're left to be continued to see if he makes his shot or not.
Outstanding issue as usual. Like I mentioned about the All New Inhumans, some of these books aren't wrapped into Civil War and that's definitely fine by me. You can never go wrong with a re-emergence of Ultron and Gerry Duggan proves it. Looking forward to the next issue, I give this one a 10/10.

All New Inhumans #8

Written by James Asmus
Penciled by Stefano Caselli
Cover by Jamal Campbell
Published Jun 15, 2016

Gorgon explains to Swain he and the crew plan on staying a few extra days at Utolan, the hidden city of Flint's birth. They ply him with native girls and the hot springs while Flint and his mother catch up on old times. Ana Kravinoff, whom Flint's sister Ikelli is pretty much trying to murder, comes out of hiding to try and get Flint to back his people off. He later bonds with his mother after a meal, and learns that his father kidnapped him and fled the city, leaving his mother and sister behind and was later killed on a trip back from America.
Ana sneaks into the great chamber and triggers an alarm. After incapacitating the guards, she explains to them that she wants to know more about the city's genetic engineering program. Back at Irellis' quarters, Ikelli shows up and argues, asking what it is Ana is looking for and clearly jealous she's never been cooked such a meal as her newly found brother received.
The issue wraps with Gorgon being assisted into his bed by an orderly. Vishann comes in with a message from Gorgon's ship that the terrigen cloud has begun a westward shift. After delivering this message, she pretty much tries to rape him explaining she wants him to father her child. He resists and his wheelchair thing pops to life, sabotaged and trying to kill her. He explains that he isn't in control, right before the saboteur runs in and accuses him of attempted murder. The charges are read to him and with that, the issue is to be continued.
I like how this one book doesn't seem to have Civil War involvement. I'm liking that storyline but it's cool to be able to let other ones play out as well. This is a nice arc and is getting pretty good. I give it an 8/10.

Civil War II #2

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Penciled by David Marquez
Cover by Marko Djurdjevic
Published Jun 15, 2016

While the Inhuman Ulysses sleeps in New Attilan, a stealthed out Iron Man makes his move. He kidnaps him, however not after a fight between Medusa, Karnak, and many others. Effectively an act of war, the Ultimates are charged with trying to find a way to diffuse the situation. They take off for Stark Tower where the Inhumans are trying to keep one of their own from destroying the building. Captain Marvel buys time, telling Medusa that they will return the hostage to them. They just might need a little time to do so.
Back at an unknown location, Tony interrogates Ulysses who explains to him that he doesn't know anything. Tony makes a copy of his brain before the wall is broken down by the Avengers and Ultimates. An argument breaks out between Carol and Tony... again before they're all interrupted by another one of Ulysses's visions. This time it's of the Hulk killing all of them. Just before the issue ends, Captain Marvel walks in on an unsuspecting Bruce Banner. He looks up from his experiments to welcome her, although her demeanor looks very much concerned. With that, the issue concludes and we have to wait until the next book to find out what happens.
This series is turning out to be less climatic than I'd assumed. I expected something on the lines of Secret Wars - things that would be completely shocking. It just appears to me to be a dialogue-fest although it IS only the 2nd issue. I'm sure it will step up but for now, we're still waiting. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Deadpool #14

Written by Gerry Duggan
Penciled by Mike Hawthorne
Cover by Rafael Albuquerque
Published Jun 15, 2016

Deadpool wakes up in the arms of Shiklah underground. After pretty much putting him through the honeydo ringer, he finally persuades her to go topside. She assembles her crew of monsters and they hit the streets, immediately finding the mercs on the verge of the the fight of what turns out to be the initial pages of Civil War #1.
Throughout the next few pages, the mercs pretty much save as many people trapped during the Avengers/Inhumans/X-Men's battle with the gigantic being attacking the city. Afterwards when the big Stark Tower party invite doesn't appear to extend to the rest of Deadpool's team, he leaves them hanging and they're pretty mad about it. They consider going solo while Deadpool chats it up at the party with the Inhuman Ulysses. While they go back and forth, the scene cuts to J. Jonah Jameson flying the Daily Bugle chopper with a live feed, talking about the heroic efforts of Deadpool "and his hirelings".
This is too much for the mercs, who start their own business - the Mercs for Money. Looking for startup capital, they just happen to run into Cable, who explains to them that the way he gets his money is to just go back in time constantly and deposit it. The interest alone makes him millions. The mercs have so,e questions for him but before they can ask them, this issue is to be continued.
Good issue. After last issue's story from the future, it was good for the mercs to get back in this book. Plus with Cable you can never really go wrong. I give it an 8/10.

Star Wars #20

Written by Jason Aaron
Penciled by Mike Mayhew
Cover by Mike Mayhew
Published Jun 15, 2016
During the great drought on Tatoine, Jabba the Hut's thugs were defeated by a mysterious hidden Jedi, one master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Years later, he's hired the wookie bounty hunter Black Krrsantan to hunt him down. The first thing the wookie does is kidnap Uncle Owen. He takes him to a canyon and starts beating him when Ben hears what's going on. After trying a failing mind trick, he's knocked to the ground and Obi-Wan is faced with a tough choice.
If he pulls the light saber, Owen Lars will know him to be a Jedi - knowledge of which will ultimately one day cost him his life. As the battle rages, he realizes he has no choice. Captured, Obi-wan uses the saber to cut through the net the wookie has him in and uses the force to save Owen, who's been thrown off the cliff. He levitates him and uses the sword to fight the bounty hunter. As he's trying to pull him back onto the cliff, he's distracted by the wookie and Owen falls. Rescued at the very last minute by his adopted nephew Luke Skywalker, the battle ends. Black Krrsantan is returned to Jabba as a failure and Owen is able to keep all information of his encounter with the jedi a secret. And with that, the issue concludes.
The art in this comic book is spectacular. With the departure of Francis Yu who'd penciled the previous two issues, they get back to a realistic aesthetic which earlier issues were known for. I always love these old Obi-Wan stories as well as you can't really go wrong with them. Great issue. I give it a 9/10.

Uncanny Inhumans #10

Written by Charles Soule
Penciled by Kev Walker
Cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli
Published Jun 1, 2016
Not much is known about the Inhuman Reader. Although blind, he might be one of New Attilian's most powerful citizens. His abilities allow him to manifest anything he reads into reality. Recently he was integral in foiling the schemes of the Capo, an evil Inhuman with the power to transfer his consciousness into others. The problem is that he escaped after possessing the body of Reader's dog, Forey. He goes on a mission to get him back, but is followed by Treste.
He spots Forey, but it was unfortunately a trap set by the some of the Capo's stooges. They take his braille cards keeping him from reading, and shoot both him and Treste. He wakes up tied chained to a post with the unconscious Treste beside him. However, he's managed to sleep - giving him the power of a full read. Setting pebbles in the sand, he's able to spell out readings and can leap back into the past until he's finally able to get the upperhand on them. Throughout the ordeal, Treste learns his powers are incredible - and ones he wants to keep from the royals.
All of this turns out to be a diversion, and through it Reader learns it was a plan to get Forey near Iso to leap in her and take her body. Reader and Treste get there just in time, and he's able to pull the Capo out during the leap, and turns him into braile on the glass wall. There he shatters it and the Capo is seemingly gone from there lives forever.
I assume that since Marvel doesn't have the X-Men to make movies out of, these titles are being forged to take their place. Hopefully they don't forget about our favorite mutants but for now, I'm enjoying it immensely. I give this issue a 9/10.

All New X-Men #10

Written by Dennis Hopeless
Penciled by Mark Bagley
Cover by Mark Bagley
Published Jun 8, 2016

Having been abandoned by Evan and the actual, real, young version of Apocalypse himself, Beast wakes up surrounded by ancient Egyptians and almost certainly about to be put to death. Luckily for him though, their wise man explains to them that it might not be too smart a move since he's the only one who would have answers on the whereabouts of their master's son - so cooler heads prevail. He takes him back to his quarters and fashions a spell that will have him talking.
Hank's being pretty much experimented on when the father of En Sabah bursts in, beating up the wise man and explaining it's time to step it up a notch. While in Perunefer, Evan is amazed to see the boy who will someday become the biggest genocidal mass murderer of all time actually diffuse a situation with kindness as their friend Erika starts a ruckus in the town square. They all decide to go cliff-diving and Erika explains the young sultan En Sabah never measured up to his father's conquering ways. She asks if that sounds like he's supposed to become evil some day and Evan responds with an "I don't know..."
The group decides to take it's chances and sail with Erika's father to the next port. En Sabah begs Evan to come with them, but he explains he can't leave Hank. Suddenly the Raiders, En Sabah's father's rivals, attack. Using his powers, Evan fights back. Aboard the ship and sailing away, they suddenly receive a blind telepathic hologram... En Sabah's father has Beast tied up and being tortured. He says to them all he'll see them soon, and with that, this issue comes to a close.
Good story. Not all too X-Mennish since it's just Kid Apocalypse and Beast but an enjoyable chapter of this story nonetheless. I give it a 7/10.

Daredevil #8

Written by Charles Soule
Penciled by Goran Sudzuka
Cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli
Published Jun 8, 2016

Matt Murdock, alter-ego of the man without fear, finds himself at a casino in Macau. It isn't often he gets to spend a little adventure time away from Hell's Kitchen, but when the opportunity presents itself, he'll obviously take it. As he sits around the table, he's able to study each of his opponents mannerisms in a way the average poker face doesn't give away. Heart rate, measured breathing, nervous mannerisms all play into his hand. He wins. big.
Later, using the name Laurent Levasseur, he has a drink with Adhira, a new acquaintance, explaining he has to meet a friend later. There's one more game in the tournament, and since Daredevil knows he'll be facing a telepath who actually works for the casino to win their money back, his mind will have to be even stronger.
They begin, and to drag out a few pages and really bring nothing to the issue, the art reflects Daredevil doing some kind of mind battle with Mr. Apex. Seeing as how he's blind, there's nothing for the telepath to see and Matt eventually defeats him. Later on, Adhira tries her luck with him again, but he explains he still has a friend to meet. As he laments he can't even cash in his earnings, he gets into costume, and steps out on the ledge. There, the person he is apparently supposed to meet is none other than the Amazing Spider-Man, and together, they're off on an adventure which is sadly left to be continued.
Good little story but definitely a downer in a sea of hits. Every issue in a series has to have a downbeat and this is regrettably one of them. Still, seeing what Charles Soule did with the wind up for a new tale was impressive, and even void of much content, is still better than what some of these writers turn in. I give it an 8/10.

Guardians of the Galaxy #9

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Penciled by Valerio Schiti
Cover by Arthur Adams
Published Jun 8, 2016

The badoon are preparing for the incoming Guardians of the Galaxy, and to say the warden of this prison planet is a little scared would certainly be an understatement. Once they arrive, his panic quickly turns into reality as Drax and Gamora begin tearing through the badoon defenses like butter. As the Guardians keep asking where the target they came to rescue is, everyone plays dumb, including Gamora who is ambushed and quickly taken prisoner herself. Things look bleak for the adopted daughter of Thanos.
Once in their custody, Marud, a creepy torture doctor alien, explains he's there to get information out of her under any means necessary. Gamora asks where Angela is, and he tells her that she's in this very facility. He explains that she's part of a strategy to fill the power vacuum with the Kree and Skrull Empires having fallen. Just as he prepares to torture Gamora in order to coax Thanos out of hiding, she releases the black vortex, an elemental power she'd been holding onto in case of an emergency. It destroys much of the holding cell and she's reunited with Angela.
As Drax brings her her things, he explains that Quill has been taken prisoner and it's imperative they leave to find him. Angela agrees, and the three of them set out to first find Star Lord, and then destroy the badoon empire once and for all.
This story is interesting the way it's being told. This latest arc is clearly something you're going to have to read again in order to figure out what's going on, but it's worth it. Art looks awesome and the story is well crafted. I give it an 8/10.

All New All Different Avengers #10

Written by Mark Waid
Penciled by Mahmud Asraar
Cover by Alex Ross
Published Jun 1, 2016

The Avengers are on their way to find Nova's dad. Using an old ship the Fantastic Four abandoned, Tony Stark fashioned some type of propulsion engine using Thor's hammer, and blasted the group of these Avengers into space. Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man are pretty much floored by the view. Since it's old hat to Nova, he's less than impressed. With Vision using Nova's helmet to track for signs of his father, original Nova Jesse Alexader, the team finally get a hit. They fly close to the breathable planet, and as they plan to pull back, are blasted out of the sky and forced to make a crash landing.
As they investigate this strange landscape, Thor and Iron Man fly towards the source of what blasted them - a large tower fueled by a familiar looking bracelet. Meanwhile, the aliens tell Vision who translates to the group that at one point of every day, a large black hole appears, taking members of the prisoners stuck on the planet until it's full. Back in New Jersey, Jarvis takes the new Wasp Nadia Pym to meet her stepmother, original Wasp Janet Van Pym. She prepares for an uncomfortable meeting, but as the door to her estate flies open, she's hurriedly on her way to save the day. She tells Nadia they can talk on the way, and just like that it appears Stepdaughter and mother appear to be hitting it off.  Back on the mystery planet,  the Avengers conclude the only way to get off the planet is to let it the black hole take them too. As they're pulled into the hole they quickly find themselves prisoner. As they walk in chains, Ms Marvel makes a break for it. She's quickly struck down. For the person in charge of this scary planet appears to be the gigantic ethereal being Annihilus, and just as he flexes his muscles to pretty much destroy them, we're left to be continued.
Great book as usual. While I don't put this on the A+, greatest comics going right now... list.. it's pretty far up the ladder from seminal books like All New Wolverine and DC's current Superman. Pretty good story arc running in this one. I give it an 8/10.
