The book opens with a flashback. Young Nathan Summers runs towards his friends being assimilated into technology. Fast forward to today, and he's 30 years in future Japan. He grabs a girl running in fear from the sentinel Nimrod, but using the virus he keeps at bay with telekinesis, he mortally wounds the machine. Later he transports the girl and her parents to 2070 Austrailia to further hide.
Only downside, all the kangaroos are sentinels. |
Back in the present, his daughter Hope Summers walks towards the X-Men Gold Team's HQ, welcomed to stay by Kitty Pryde. That night she awakens, frightened by the vision of her father's future terror. The beast restrains her and scars her face. The next day, Cable heads for the mansion and transports into his daughter's room. Seeing the fresh wound over her eye, he explains to her that the monster's name is Metus, a techno-organic creature that has followed him since childhood.
Together, Metus can never Beat Us. AHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! |
Away in the woods, the father and daughter resolve their differences. Cable apologizes for constantly running out on her. The two of them agree to work together to fight Metus once and for all.
Later that evening, he sits alone in front of a fire. It's the perfect environment for his attack. Just as suspected, the monster leaps from the trees, affecting Cable's bionic arm and distorting it. he jumps away, landing a few shots into Metus before using his dagger to cut the tendrils loose. It takes Rachel's shape and binds him, forcing him to relive various torturous scenes from his past and future. Finally as it shifts into a macabre, freakish form collected from X-Men he's failed, Hope trains her weapon on it and fires.
About time, Rach... |
The issue wraps with them mimicing each others telekinesis. Once he get's close enough, Cable reaches out and absorbs the hulking techno-beast. As he transforms into a scary mass, his daughter is visibly scared, but he tells her everything is going to be ok? Is he telling the truth? We'll have to wait to find out as this issue is left to be continued.
...everything is fine. |
Man, so I wasn't aware of Ed Brisson leaving this title. To say I'm a little surprised is an understatement. The Newer Mutants arc was such an awesome throwback that I knew it couldn't last forever. I feel like they may have put it in capable hands though. Thompson and Nadler are huge fans of my formative comic book era. They appear excited to take over these characters in Cable and Hope alike. I'm interested in seeing where they take things. I give this one a 7/10.
