The Flight Attendant exists in a weird space genre-wise since it’s as much an outright comedy as it is a mystery. We’ve seen this all throughout the show so far, but mostly in dialogue and tone rather than situations. There’s an extended bit in the third episode, “Funeralia”, in which Cassie attends Alex’s funeral with her gay coworker Shane (Griffin Matthews), who she completely fails to inform about the nature of the event until they get there, and it strikes me as the longest and most involved “funny” sequence in the show so far, even if it’s also tragic in the sense of how much Cassie seems willing to exploit her friends and compromise basic moral decency these days.
Of course, she’s there for a reason, which is to press Alex’s mother for information since she owns a hefty chunk of the company that seems rather integral to all the various goings-on, but doing it at a funeral, really? The show introduced Cassie from the very beginning as being a bit compromised as far as politeness and respectability go, and part of her arc has been circumstances worsening that tendency, but she’s reaching all new lows of invasiveness here — not to mention endangering herself and her colleagues in the process!
One of the big questions now is whether Cassie’s self-serving behavior is rubbing off on people she knows, most notably Megan, who is beginning to get embroiled in corporate espionage. Lawbreaking is becoming commonplace for everyone, it seems, and the sense of everything rapidly spiraling out of control is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
