Guardians of the Galaxy #7-12

FAITHLESS

As the Nova Corps are investigating a strange new ship, something exits it and manages to ensare each and everyone of them, later causing them to mindlessly remove their helmets. Meanwhile the Guardians of the Galaxy manage to get a millisecond of R&R before a strange transmission from J'son, Peter Quill's father comes in. Days earlier, he too encountered this spacecraft and ominously ends the message telling his son to have faith.

But you gotta have faith faith faith... oooooooh you gotta have faith..

They immediately plot a course and half of them board the strange vessel. But as their each assimilated, Groot and Moondragon are forced to leave their team behind. Back on board, the Patriarch reveals himself to be Peter's father. But back aboard the Starship Bowie, we find out that what's left of the Guardians still have a very sick Rocket Raccoon on their side.

Gross.

In a retelling of his origin, Rocket explains that he’s regressing into whatever he was pre-experiments. Groot is incensed, but Rocket makes up for it by showing him the massive mech suit he’s created. Meanwhile, the Patriarch shows Peter all of the heroes he keeps in stasis and the scores of Warlock-like cocoons he’s created. He presents a future where death has come for the entire galaxy, but a plan to partially drain Earth’s life force will stave it off. Peter punches him, falling out of his favor.

Take THAT!

Rocket, Groot and Moondragon meet up with a secret weapon... a young version of Magus - the dark Warlock. After a long time in solitude he’s ready to get back to anything. While J’Son shows Star Lord the hatching savior... a confused Drax the Destroyer. Peter tries to make a connection with his old friend but is thrown to the horde of other mindless Drax’s. With the command to tear him apart imminent, what’s left of the Guardians shows up. And Magus demands an audience.

I got a few things to say...

Moondragon quickly surmises Drax isn’t the real Drax, and they’re able to quickly take out the herd of faux Destroyers. Meanwhile Magus goes to meet with J’Son but is eventually able to overpower him using the massive crew he’s managed to take control of. He reveals his plan to drain Earth to replenish his church’s coffers, but luckily Rocket is freed from his damaged Mech suit by a tiny army of Groot shards.

A few stabs and he's OUT!

Just as the station nears earth, the Patriarch gives the order to fire but nothing happens. Power has been lost and soon reversed as Rocket Raccoon engineers the machine to instead drain all the Drax replicas (except for one). Moondragon fries her dad’s brain and turns him back, and Peter whisks his crew to the greatest hospital in the galaxy. Rocket is going to be fine, but someone who unfortunately cannot say the same is J’Son. Billions of years later, he finds out he could never really stop Death, because in the end, Thanos wins. With that, this extremely long and drawn out story arc comes to a close, but really the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy, is just beginning. Again.

Oh look, I win again!

So Volume 10,000 of this series comes to a quiet end as a new writing staff is brought on board to crank it up once again. Donny Cates did a marvelous job, but the powers that be see it worthwhile to reboot it again. The good news is that you get a BRAND NEW NUMBER ONE ISSUE!!!! Ooooooh. Ahhhhhhh! The bad news is that 5 years from now, you’ll never honestly know what volume or story you’re holding in your hands. For this series in particular though, none of that’s their fault. This creative staff did a pretty good job with the cards dealt to them and it all told a pretty good story in the end. I give this one a 10/10.
