Immortal Hulk #11

THIS WORLD OUR HELL

Written by Al Ewing
Penciled by Joe Bennett
Published Jan 2, 2019

Hulk and reporter Jackie McGee walk through the abstract hellscape opened by Absorbing Man. Subsequently, Puck discovers the former supervillain back topside, and explains that he's going to be the one that closes it. Meanwhile, Hulk runs into his demoniacal alter ego and the issue ends with a fight to the death. Obviously I've enjoyed this series immensely but it's clear Al Ewing is testing just how philosophically he can pull his audience along. This is about the limit. I give this one a 6/10.

Deadpool #8

Written by Skottie Young
Penciled by Nic Klein
Published Jan 2, 2019

Silly Seal hires Deadpool to kill the drug running Ziggy Pig. One thing the merc doesn't plan on in the mission though is running into his daughter Ellie. Thanks to his recent mindwipe, he remembers nothing of the circumstances and their true relationship continues to be unknown. The issue wraps with Wade killing everyone except for his true target, thanks to Ellie for subtly unarming him. More insane stories from Skottie Young but with artwork that slightly redeems it, I give this one a 7/10.

Champions #1

BEAT THE DEVIL pt I

Written by Jim Zub
Penciled by Steven Cummings
Published Jan 2, 2019

The new Champions fight three different campaigns across the world and are fairly successful in them all. Now lead by Ms. Marvel, the much larger team gathers to receive a pep talk from their new leader. Everyone but Spider-Man. As Kamala leaves her confused teammates quarters, it's revealed he's had a visit from the demonic Mephisto. What does that mean for the new group? Jim Zub continues where the series left off with brilliant artwork from Steven Cummings. I give this debut issue an 8/10.

Uncanny X-Men #7

DISASSEMBLED pt VII

Written by Matthew Rosenberg, Kelly Thompson and Ed Brisson
Penciled by Pere Perez
Published Dec 26, 2018

In a creepy alternate dimension, the young X-Men have chosen sides. Glob and Armor follow Nate Gray while Pixie and Rockslide want to destroy him. They finally square off and for a bit, teammates fight teammates. The issue wraps with Pixie convincing Armor that X-Man must die. So what's gonna happen next? Quality work continues from this x-committee of writers and artists. I give this one a 9/10.

Fantastic Four #5

THE WEDDING ISSUE

Written by Dan Slott
Penciled by Aaron Kuder, Michael Allred, and Adam Hughes
Published Dec 26, 2018

With the wedding of Ben and Alicia finally here, we're whisked around an all-star penciler's dream lineup. From dancing lessons to recapping their origin, from bachelor parties to fighting the Serpent Society, from Doctor Doom and Galactus interruptions - we finally see these two lovebirds tie the knot. Dan Slott continues on in amazing fashion to construct the 650th issue of this series worthy of it's predecessors. I give this one a 9/10.

X-Force #1

SINS OF THE PAST pt I

Written by Ed Brisson
Penciled by Dylan Burnett
Published Dec 26, 2018

X-Force continues to brutally hunt Kid Cable, with far more hardcore methods than their superhero team counterparts. Meanwhile, young Nathan Summers and Deathlok try their best to complete a delicate weapons deal. Luckily for all of them, their paths cross and both are able to fight against the Transian officials. The issue wraps with news that the docile president has been overthrown and the evil Constantin has a far heavier hand planned for the mutants in the tiny country. Ed Brisson is obviously no stranger to flawless writing, and Dylan Burnett’s abstract style is pretty rad to boot. I give this one a 10/10.

Uncanny X-Men #6

DISASSEMBLED pt VI

Written by Matthew Rosenberg, Kelly Thompson and Ed Brisson
Penciled by Yildaray Cinar
Published Dec 19, 2018

Newly transformed Archangel fights Magneto but holds a grudge against Psylocke for it. He still helps them find X-Man though, and although there’s a brief conversation, it ends with the X-Men rushing him but quickly incapacitated. Luckily their younger teammates tagged along with Legion and Jamie Madrox. Nate is able to tell them all the reason he’s doing all of this is because he’s dying. But the conversation is short lived. Legion banishes the young X-Men back into another dimension and the issue is left to be continued. More amazing work from a brilliant X-creative team, I give this one a 9/10.
