Avengers #11

THE STRENGTH AND CONVICTION OF PHILIP COULSON

Written by Jason Aaron
Penciled by Ed McGuiness
Published Dec 12, 2019

While Black Panther holds a meeting of some of Earth’s biggest superheroes, Thor and She-Hulk go on an awkward date. Though the meeting can’t seem to make any definitive headway about what the next step is gonna be, the good news is that Hulk makes some inroads with Jennifer while Phil Coulson returns in a more sinister role than ever before. What will it all mean? We’ll have to wait to find out. Jason Aaron continues to prove that he’s more than adept to handle the Avengers while Ed McGuiness’s pencils manage to impress. I give this one a 9/10.

Amazing Spider-Man #11

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT pt I

Written by Nick Spencer
Penciled by Ryan Ottley
Published Dec 12, 2018

It’s Christmas in midtown, and former foe-turned-friend J. Jonah Jameson is up for a Lifetime Achievement award. Only problem is that Mayor Fisk is the master of ceremonies. As Spider-Man explains to Jonah that he can’t be the man who inducts him, the two of them are blindsided by the Enforcers. A fight breaks out and they end up staring down at the Scorpion. What’ll happen next? Another action packed issue from Nick Spencer with fantastic art from Ryan Ottley, I give this one an 8/10.

Venom #9

THE ABYSS pt I

Written by Donny Cates
Penciled by Ryan Stegman
Published Dec 5, 2019

Eddie returns to San Francisco with his now mindless symbiote/dog thing. While confronting his estranged father, it's clear that Eddie's memories of his childhood have been altered. With his dad unable to remember his sister Mary, Eddie is forced to flee. Later he's joined by a half brother he wasn't aware of who tells him they need to kill their father. With Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman dishing on the greatest horror comics I've seen lately, this one earns a solid 10/10.

Uncanny X-Men #4

DISASSEMBLED pt IV

Written by Matthew Rosenberg, Kelly Thompson, and Ed Brisson
Penciled by Pere Perez
Published Dec 5, 2019

Armor is able to keep up the facade of the X-Men's death while X-Man Nate Grey psychically addresses the nation. The elder X-Men seek out these new 4 horsemen while the X-kids decide to listen to Legion against Jean's orders. The issue ends with Glob trying to convince Jamie Madrox to help them again, but is he up to the task. Another weekly dime from this creative team, I give it a 9/10.

Star Wars #58

ESCAPE pt III

Written by Kieron Gillen
Penciled by Angel Unzueta
Published Dec 5, 2018

Luke and Markona storm towards the attacking Thanrax. Later, Tula reveals to Luke that her grandmother was a Jedi and her father sought refuge and retirement on Hubin. While they wait for a transport out, Luke tells Han and Leia that he’s built a transmitter to call for help. But Leia explains waiting it out is the plan. She’s built a way to destroy Shu-Torun forever. Where do the rebels go from here? Keiron Gillen shows why he’s still a Jedi master in his own right. I give this one an 8/10.

Immortal Hulk #10

THAUMIEL

Written by Al Ewing
Penciled by Joe Bennett
Published Dec 5, 2018

Alpha Flight pursues Hulk, later finding him fighting with the mutilated Absorbing Man. Meanwhile, Shadow Base mulls executing him. But in the time everyone waits to do anything, Creel runs towards the original blast site of Banner’s gamma exposure. Everyone fights the Hulk as he tries to explain but it’s too late. The issue ends with the Green Door opening and exposing everyone to Bruce Banner’s hell. More of the greatest horror comic genre from Al Bennet, this series continues at a high point. I give this one a 9/10.

Deadpool #7

CHRISTMAS MISSED US

Written by Skottie Young
Penciled by Nic Klein
Published Dec 5, 2018

In a move I could have never seen happening, Deadpool gets hired by a bunch of stiffed kids to kill Santa Clause. When he arrives in the north pole, he learns that Santa's elves went on strike. Deadpool takes out Tinsel, the head elf and after returning the labor, helps Santa deliver some presents. Quick writing that hopefully begins to grow just a little more substance, I give this one a 7/10.
