X-Men Red #9

THE HATE MACHINE pt IX

Written by Tom Taylor
Penciled by Roge Antonio
Published Oct 24, 2018

The showdown continues with Cassandra Nova... still. 9 Months after it began. But for everything I've pointed out that I thought X-Men Red has gotten wrong, I have to give this one credit. Because this truly feels like the classic books Tom Taylor works so hard to emulate. Whether it's young romance, aka Gentle and Trinary - or old romance between Nightcrawler and Rachel Summers, this book manages to introduce a big problem and mostly saves it by the end. This storyline is starting to get a little stale, but next to X-Men Black - it looks a lot better than it's been. I give this one a 9/10.

X-Men Black: Juggernaut #1

STOPPABLE

Written by Robbie Thompson
Penciled by Shawn Crystal
Published Oct 24, 2018

Like the issue before it, and probably after it - I still don't understand X-Men Black. Marvel really dangled the carrot with the Magneto book coming with a Chris Claremont writing credit, but short of that - what is this about? I guess I'm glad we get a one shot story about Juggernaut, plus another chapter of this pointless Apocalypse story.. but still, you could skip this series and not miss anything. The good thing about it all is that the Emma Frost book comes next and mercilessly ends it. What will we learn next week? Nothing but how to throw $4.99 away really fast and for no reason. I give this one a 5/10.

Punisher #3

WORLD WAR FRANK pt III

Written by Matthew Rosenberg
Penciled by Szymon Kudranski
Published Oct 24, 2018

With the short amount of time Daredevil has left, apparently he's decided to spend some of it with old friend Frank Castle. The only problem is that it wasn't time well spent. This issue was long on action, which of course most Punsiher readers crave - but short on pretty much everything else. 90% of this issue was a fight, but luckily it ended with a teaser highlighting.. wait, the return of Jigsaw? Suspense aside, it still wasn't enough to make up the lack of substance. I give this one a 7/10.

Return of Wolverine #2

CHAPTER 2:
LIMBO

Written by Charles Soule
Penciled by Declan Shalvey
Published Oct 24, 2018

Wolverine and Ana are hot on the trail of Persephone and her Killteams. But that's not all. With fights against Omega Red clones and an oddly familiar claw wielding person, Logan's got his now molten claw containing hands full. The book ends with a shot of a few X-Men finally locating their old teammate, and it has us all looking forward to what's in store for that reunion. I give this one a 9/10.

Amazing Spider-Man #8

HEIST pt I

Written by Nick Spencer
Penciled by Humberto Ramos
Published Oct 24, 2018

A brand new story arc entitled "Heist" reveals somebody has been getting their grubby little fingers on all the Avengers' stuff. Not to mention cameos from the Punisher and even a handful of X-Men, the issue sheds some light on the re-emergence of the Thieves' Guild. Plus ends with the return of the Black Cat. Is there anything else Nick Spencer can cram in here? You know what? I'm just kinda glad Boomerang is finally not in another book. I give this one an 8/10.

X-Men Black: Mystique #1

ONE SHORT DAY

Written by Seanan McGuire
Penciled by Marco Failla
Published Oct 17, 2018

Another one-take to fulfill what I assume is the continued run of X-Men Black. I don’t know who this creative team is, nor why they were assigned to this story. But either way, Mystique goes undercover to steal some files from Trask Industries. While she’s there, she frees a mystery mutant and well - that’s about it. The small vignette following, which tells a larger story via a 5 part series on Apocalypse, is actually far better. I don’t understand the point of this book, but whatevs. I give this one a 6/10.

Thor #6

MIDGARD'S FINAL DOOM

Written by Jason Aaron
Penciled by Christian Ward
Published Oct 17, 2018

I’ve really been enjoying this series. It seems like Jason Aaron’s been writing Thor forever, and with that being the case, likely gets bored churning out story after story of the modern Asgaurdian. So why not throw it to millions of years into the future. This series combines the All-Father Thor with a future Phoenix Wolverine battling a super Doom. Complete with interludes featuring Thor favorite Ego, this is about as good as it gets. I give this one an 8/10.
