Extraordinary X-Men #10

   Since the Inhumans like to time travel so much, why shouldn't the X-Men get into the action, right? Transformed by Apocalypse into one of his horsemen, Colossus fights the rest of his team who are trying desperately to save him over an arc of over 600 mutant embryos. Between tearing off Cerebra's arm, almost killing Jean Grey with it, and throwing Glob about 5 miles into the air, he escapes with what they came for. 

   Back at X-haven in Limboworld, Collossus's sister Magik trains new mutant Sapna to use her brand new powers. Impressed by her progress, she gives her the honor of wearing her old uniform. Meanwhile back in the future, a distraught Storm almost gives up on the mission, if not for the inspiring half-time speech acumen of Bobby Drake. Resuming their search for the arc and their old teammate, Glob shyly attempts to ask out the beautiful time-trapped Jean Gray, only to be interrupted by the mole-men that attack them on their way. As they hack and bamf their way through them, Logan jumps in to save the original Marvel Girl who explodes through them, proving that she's the type who will rarely need saving.

   Seeing as how Magik has tired of waiting for the team to get back, she disobeys Forge and prepares to transport to find them. She better hurry though. As the X-Men prepare to make a run at Apocalypse's fortress, the new four horsemen prepare to fight back with a move familiar to them... This fastball special involves Horsemen versions of Colossus and Deadpool throwing a scary mutated Venom at them. He swallows Logan and the issue concludes with the team figuring out how he's gonna rescue the old man one more time.

   I've always thought that Uncanny X-Men would be the perennial flagship X-title, but the more and more I read, the more I realize that this one is certainly receiving the attention du'jour. I give it a 10/10 and can't wait to see #11.

Batman #10

  I Am Suicide, Pt 2

   Batman springs his plan into action, attacking the Santa Prisca prison Bane is held up in with Psycho Pirate, in order to get the supervillain to give him the venom he so desperately needs for his protege at home, Gotham Girl. He flies the Batwing into range and when he gets close enough, the bullets rip the aircraft apart. When he crash lands, he ejects into the crowd of Bane's army. They drag him to their leader, and with that, the beatdown game is on.
   Bane beats the caped crusader mercilessly. Each hit harder than the next, Batman keeps repeating the same stanza over and over. "Bane. I've come for Psycho Pirate. I need him to save someone who needs to be saved. Turn him over. I go away. Refuse to turn him over and I will break your damn back...". While this sounds super hardcore for the dark knight, it doesn't phase Bane much, who just throws him to pretty much die in one of the legendary water cells of his prison fortress.
   As the water rises, Batman punches the walls for holes to gain his footing. He does so and climbs to the top in agony. Eventually he frees himself through the grating, and finds the backdoor to the complex. Opening the door, he finds Catwoman and the Ventriloquist waiting. Tiger, Punch, and Jewelee have apparently executed their portion of the plan and are elsewhere, and now as Batman so eloquently put it, the team prepares to break his damn back, and amidst some super-rad dialogue from Catwoman that runs the entire issue, we're left to see where it continues in the next chapter.
   This is what Batman is all about. Literally probably the best DC has to offer, Tom King is a perfect writer and this art is crisp and amazing. Catwoman's note just reads perfectly - almost verbatim of what you'd hear a stage four clinger ex-girlfriend saying IF you were a dark and brooding superhero, which I'm pretty sure is the point. I give it a 10/10 and cannot WAIT for #11.

Star Wars #19

   Princess Leia, Sana Starros, and Dr. Aphra stand face to face with their attacker, who has Han and Luke tied up with demands that Leia kill the imperial prisoner they hold. That prisoner is Dr. Aphra, one of which Sana has no trouble killing and aims her blaster to do so while being persuaded by Leia not to shoot. She asks the masked attacker to reveal himself. He does so and it turns out that he's a very badly mutated Eneb Ray, the greatest spy that the rebels had ever put in the field. Leia explains that they'd thought he died, to which Eneb replies that his death is still quite eminent.
   As he counts down from 5, Sana prepares the killshot. Leia begs and stalls for long enough for R2D2 to fire an ion pulse which disables gravity aboard the prison planet. Aphra and Sana float around still trying to murder each other while Leia gets the upper hand on Eneb. She's able to give control back to the warden, who mentions he's missing one prisoner. Dr. Aphra is shoved into an escape pod and ejected, outfitted with tracking devices and headed back to serve Darth Vader.
   Luke and Han secretly reminisce about the nerfs they herded to get the rebel money back Han had gambled away, while Leia explains to a captured Eneb she's going to get him help. He tells her that he should have listened to her and how they will most certainly lose the war their fighting. The issue ends with some storm troopers searching the now abandoned prison complex for someone named Kolar Ludd. Their search is called off though when a high ranking and lightsabre yielding trooper tells them orders have come in and it's time to kill some rebels.. And with that, the issue ends.
   So this was the end of the Rebel Jail storyline, one that wasn't short on details and mini-plots as our trio of the princess, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker continue to bond for their later adventures. Aaron and Yu continue to impress and I look forward to issue #20. I give this one a 9/10.

All New Wolverine #8

   100 miles off the coast of New Jersey, there's a deal going down to swap an exquisite and ornate looking box when suddenly SHIELD interrupts the trade. Professor Holt, one of the supposed participants in the deal, opens the box releasing a scent that we find out later summons super mega-dragon Fin Fang Foom.
   Meanwhile Laura and Gabby walk their pet wolverine through the park. Maria Hill of SHIELD calls and tells Laura to meet her on the fire escape of her apartment. Some boats, agents, and everything else mysteriously disappeared except for this one box and Hill needs her to find a scent on it. And that's not all. One of the people they were asking to help with this previously was none other than inter-dimensional anomaly, old man Logan. Laura disregards him as some kind of impostor but asks where it was exactly he vanished. The helicarrier takes them there, and as the agents open the box again, Wolverine knows what it attracts...
   The dragon appears, and attacks the aircraft carrier as Wolverine runs out onto the deck and into the beast's mouth. She knows where this Logan has disappeared to, and she's the only one who can fight from the inside out to rescue him.
   This issue was inherently better than the last one. Although still pretty vapid and of little story, it at least gets back on point, setting up what I assume will be several points of the upcoming Civil War storyline. Not too bad overall and mostly redeeming itself from the previous issue, I give it a 7/10.

Civil War II #0

   The issue opens up in NYC, with Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk defending the super villain Jester in a courtroom. Making the point that they're prosecuting an innocent man for nothing, she rests her case. And in Latveria, War Machine gets some terrorists to stand down, impressing the President of the United States so much, he summons him to the situation room and offers him the Defense Secretary gig.

   At Ohio State, a group of students waits for the incoming Terrigen Mist clouds and not knowing what exactly is gonna happen. Unfortunately 2 of them are later encapsulated in some kind of cocoons. At the Triskelion home of the Ultimates, Captain Marvel checks in with her emissaries and is met by old friend and resident Hulk psychiatrist Doctor Samson. After catching up, she realizes he was sent there to check up on her. On the SHIELD helicarrier, She-Hulk discusses the impending disaster with Maria Hill, who tells her that the Jester, whom Walters was defending in the beginning of the issue is dead. Killed in prison by guards, Walters tells her he was an innocent man. Hill ominously tells her that Jester would probably have committed more crimes... a statement the She-Hulk obviously disagrees with.

   The issue wraps with Michelle and Ulysses, the 2 students at Ohio State emerging from their cocoons. Michele turns into some kind of demon and lurches in attack at the crowd, when Ulysses finds himself in some kind of limbo world; a version of Columbus, Ohio filled with no people and scenes of mass destruction. With that, the issue wraps in preparation for the series to begin with issue #1.

   As with any issue number 0, you know it's gonna be a lot of setup for the main characters and situations. This was no exception. Good artwork and writing from Bendis, whom you always know that if you get him on his ga,e, does amazing work. Sets the subsequent events up perfectly and has me excited for this series. I give it an 8/10.

Old Man Logan #6

   Burger the dog is missing. Logan assures young Maureen he'll find him and tells her to go to school. He tracks him into town and eventually finds him murdered. It only takes a second more for Logan to smell machine oil - followed by several dead townspeople. This is no coincidence. It looks like somebody came after the old X-Man, and those trackers are his old enemies The Reavers.

   Bonebreaker makes the first move. He attacks with Gatling guns blazing, eventually running over the man formerly known as Wolverine's legs. With claws drawn, Logan kills his old foe, right in front of the town sheriff. He tells him to gather the townsfolk and bring them to the quarry where they'll be safe. Once there, everyone's accounted for except for the most helpless of the citizens of Killhorn Falls - the town's children.

   Logan makes it just in time, killing Muzzle and getting the kids out of danger. But before he can get them all evacuated, he takes him eye off the prize. One of the Reavers has one of the kids as a hostage, and if Logan doesn't give himself up, things could get pretty ugly pretty quick.

   I haven't been short on praise for this book in the past, and this issue is no exception. It makes some of these books Marvel publishes, like the current Spider-Man and All New Wolverine seem so laughable, I can't understand how they make the cut. In the age of "Quantity over quality", this title completely delivers. I give it a 10/10.

Superman #10

In The Name Of The Father, part 1

   Jon-El prepares for Christmas break and hanging out with his friend Kathy, much to the chagrin of his crappy classmate Walter, when he meets a new schoolmate - Maya - who turns out to be some sort of cybernetic stooge reporting about the presence of Superboy. Meanwhile Jon goes traipsing around some spooky swamp for some reason, nearly setting a forest fire when he's snagged by some unknown kiddy superheroes and brought to Gotham. There's he tied to a gurney for interrogation by Robin - Damian Wayne. Fortunately for him, his daddy Batman shows up and dashes their hopes. Unfortunately for all of them however, Superman soon follows.

   Batman and Supes argue about their kids kidnapping each other, eventually having a big Justice League father bonding moment. Robin shows Superboy around his animal collection, to which their comments to each other result in another skirmish. Eventually their fighting destroys some kind of lab Batman of course has, and he and Superman look at them both like they're about to get a major buttwhoopin. With that the issue ends, and we're left to see what happens between what I will assume will become some future Teen Titans faction, or what have you.

   Good book. It was a quick read and at least a little more rich in story than it's two previous counterparts. I couldn't help but read everything Robin said in his voice from Teen Titans Go, but that probably added a level of coolness to the mix. Not bad overall though. I'd give it an 8/10.
