Uncanny Avengers #24

Written by Jim Zub
Penciled by Kim Jacinto
Cover by RB Silva
Published Jun 14, 2017

They might not know it yet, but the former Unity Squad is trapped in a darkforce dome thanks to the newest dedicated hydra agent, Captain America. Synapse senses mass pain and confusion while Doctor Voodoo tries to read it's magic. While Synapse tries to get a cell signal, Rogue flies into the side of the dome, bouncing off. Next up, Human Torch blasts some fire at it but it's just enveloped and stops. Finally Voodoo sees something...
You leave it up to a guy named "Voodoo" to solve the problem?

A hideous beast steps out of the darkness. Rogue shoots towards it's face, dropping Synapse into freefall in the process. She blasts through it and grabs the falling Avenger. A hole where it's head once was drips tiny demons and Voodoo realizes the sky above is a conduit between the two dimensions. Determined to keep the residents safe, they protect the city below, heading in every direction fighting the monsters and ferrying the citizens away from trouble.
There's nothing to see here. Everything is under control!

Meanwhile beyond the dome, Quicksilver crosses atop it looking for some gaps. He suddenly gets an emergency transmission from Tony Stark telling him that all Avengers are needed in DC. Clearly a trick to lure those not already dealt with, he takes off running south over the water. Inside the dome, Synapse senses fear. She follows it into a burning apartment building and saves some trapped children.
Calling on Rogue to zero in on her location, the former X-Man catches them and whisks them all to safety. Wasp tells Rogue they're spreading themselves too thin, but she doesn't listen and takes off. Later, she inner monologues that she's not a leader while spying some bad guys trapped in the dome as well.
WE ARE LAUGHING!

The Shocker and Scorpia, two b-list supervillains take advantage of the chaos and rob the gold reserve. Rogue interferes and Shocker nearly brings the entire building down on all of them on accident. While they argue, some of the beasts happen upon them and Rogue warns them, they all have bigger fish to fry.
The issue wraps with Wasp, Johnny Storm, and Synapse fighting the monsters alone and outnumbered. Synapse suffers the effects of mass fear while Janet calls out to Voodoo. It's then she notices the problem. It appears he's merged with one of the beasts. He tells her not to disturb them while they're feeding and with that, we're left to be continued.
Way to take your eyes off the prize, Wasp. You blew it now!

Man - I miss this book. Of all the X and Avenger books that made it through the recent Marvel resets, this was one that was gaining ground. It's sad to see it published so irregularly. With the departure of Gerry Duggan, it could have fallen but this team of Jim Zub and Kim Jacinto hasn't skipped a beat. When Cap discontinued the Unity Squad, I thought for sure this book was history but for once, I'd be sad to see these characters go anywhere else. I even miss Cable and Deadpool - two X-Force and New Mutant characters that made those books. Either way, it's still good and I look forwward to it. I give this one a 9/10.

Deadpool #32

Written by Gerry Duggan
Penciled by Matteo Lolli
Cover by David Lopez
Published June 14, 2017

Deadpool is plagued by bad dreams of killing Coulson. Only natural when you get this much blood on your hands. Waking up on his couch in DC, he tells his daughter to get ready for school. She tells him she doesn't like her school and he tells her he can tell by the amount of kids she's beating up. Dropping her off at the Baron Zemo school, he tells her to find a teacher if anyone's bothering her. Like he says, America is having a bit of a nervous breakdown right now.
Things are a little out of control.

He swings a corner past some hydra agents burning some books. There is little resistance to Captain America's movement as Deadpool documents. A few Avengers. Ben Grimm. Miles Morales, etc. All of which Cap has charged him with bringing in. He stops by to meet with the supreme leader but he's in a meeting so he informs the guards he's going hunting, all the while a repeating gag of him screwing up the Hail Hydra battle cry.
Fail, Hydra!

The first subject he encounters is Speedball, whom is disgusted to see him working with the jackboots. Every hit bounces off of him, including one of Deadpool swords as well as countless bullets. He tells the once-Avenger they all looked up to the Unity Squad. He tells Speedball he's been looking for him as he continues to essentially beat himself up. He finally lets the hero monologue, which is plenty of time to gas bomb him. Radioing Hydra command, he requests a paddywagon. They mock him for bagging b-listers and he decides to stay out doing a little more hunting.
He hits up several empty bunkers and old headquarters looking for old timers like Black Widow and Hawkeye. His last visit is the Mount. During a hideout, he spots Quicksilver running by. He watchers through a scope and sees him delivering various items to Hawkeye. It's then he has a for sure locale of major resistance players. But he's not looking forward to squealing.
Has Deadpool seen the light?

Making it back to DC in time to take Ellie to school, he tells her that while she might not like her new school, he doesn't like his new job either. He drops her off and heads back to Hydra headquarters. Walking in, he's about to tell one of the Hydra goons about the Mount when his phone vibrates. Another text about Ellie getting into a fight and he has a change of heart. "About the Mount.. It's empty..". He finally lets out a real "Hail Hydra" and with that we're left to be continued.
Obviously we knew that the Secret Empire bug was biting at this title but I like the fact that Duggan is still able to keep it light. It's really sad to see Cap being such a slimeball, and Deadpool going along with it so easily kinda proves exactly what you'd expect. At least he has some reservation. Sadly that's more than Steve Rogers can say. And who'd have ever thought they'd see that?! I give this one a 9/10.

Avengers #8

Written by Mark Waid
Penciled by Jeremy Whitley
Cover by Alex Ross
Published Jun 7 2017

Wasp broadcasts to any Avengers who can hear her. An unidentified threat has destroyed the Baxter Building. She's cut off by the voice preparing to come after her, and Captain America's shield clanging on the railing beside her. It was two hours previous that Cap and the rest of the team comforted the young lady who'd been entombed in the basement. She strokes Hercules arm when Vision warns them all to get away from her.
So you're saying "Avenger X" doesn't sound like a good guy?

Her name is Avenger X and she's one of the Avengers greatest enemies. At first endeared, it became apparent she was absorbing their powers and draining their life force in the process. She overwhelms Vision's cooling system and he blows a hole in the top of the building, escaping in the process. Spider-Man reveals that his spider sense was going off when she walked in and Wasp chides him for not saying anything. Falcon orders everyone to help evacuate the building and Wasp to research Avenger X. Meanwhile, Spider-Man hears her sobbing in the ladies room. He goes in and though his spider sense is going crazy, trusts her and webs up her hands just to make sure. It doesn't work, and using Hercules' strength she puts him through the wall before touching his face to steal his powers.
Cassandra's got Spidey in the Cobra Clutch

Later while Sam is evacuating a floor, she comes walking up. He throws the shield at her and she's able to dodge every single throw. Thinking he's starting to lose a step, Wasp hits him up on comms and tells him she found Spidey. Comparing notes and considering what Vision said, they realize she's stealing powers. Unfortunately she locates Cap, and while Wasp tells her that they want to help her, she tells her that the best strategy is to just run away. Using the strength of Hercules combined with Spider-Man's agility, she throws Cap's shield down the staircase before it eventually knocks Thor's helmet off. Jane tells Nadia to keep running before Avenger X leaps down and attacks. She's eventually cornered but escapes because of her Spider skills. Absorbing the power of Thor, Jane is left too powerless to wield her hammer.
Thor: "You're in trouble now!" Avenger X: "Nuh uh!"

Finally we're back to where the issue began. Nadia is about to be destroyed when Victor Von Doom shows up. He engages her, realizing that her powers are far too advanced for her to master. Getting the upperhand, he holds her up until getting pummeled by Cap's shield. She readies to attack when Nadia grabs her and shrinks her into the microverse. There they battle. She demands Wasp return her but Nadia refuses. Explaining that she didn't have time to drop a marker, she stalls the villain long enough for Doom to throw Cap's shield. It spins and allows her to make sure she'll return to full size away from any obstacles. He compliments her intelligence, and try as she might to keep him for tea, he has work to do. With that, this issue is concluded.
Isn't he a little old for you anyway, Nadia?

I'm kind of bummed that this book will join the Secret Empire cabal next issue. They're just starting to get their feet wet as a standalone book and I'm really starting to enjoy where it's headed. I was less enthusiastic with the initial few issues but Waid's storytelling combined with capable artwork makes this book a real contender.I'd rather swap out somebody like Hawkeye or Hulk for Hercules but I kind of get it. Just wish there were more legacy members for a legacy title such as this. Overall I give it an 8/10 and it's only getting better.

Old Man Logan #25

Written by Ed Brisson
Penciled by Mike Deodoto Jr
Cover by Mike Deodoto Jr
Published Jun 14, 2017

High atop a mountain, an old man and his grandchildren overlook a bluff. They ask him why they can't just stay there. He says because the "heroes" here have already killed one of their kind. All because of what he MIGHT do. They'll kill all of them too so they have to strike first. So they can live without fear. He tells them they have to prepare as they all walk into an old weapons facility.
Where we going, grandpa?

Meanwhile not too far from there, Logan is happy to be away from the X-Mansion for a bit. He steps into a diner and immediately knows something is wrong. He asks for Lexi but the waitress says she has the day off. He sits at the counter and glances around and as the waitress pours his coffee he grabs her arm. There is no Lexi. The man behind the counter tells the rest of them no more pretending, but it is still a family business. He took something from them, and though he doesn't forget a face, they tell him he should remember their brother. They keep asking if he remembers but he pops his claws and tells them it ain't possible. But as the ringleader hulks up, he tells them it sure is.
Great. The people you wronged just happen to be hulks... FML.

"You killed our paw. You killed all our kin and now we're gonna kill you..." says the hulk gang. He can't believe it. He killed all of them except for the baby and Billy Bob. But that was back in the Wastelands. He claws through one of their skulls, as they slam him to the concrete. They all stomp him and he rises up and guts one of them. He thought with Banner dead in this timeline, it would have been over. Between punch after punch and stab after stab, he should have realized that if he found a way here, so would they.
He corners Billy Bob and asks how they found him. He tells Logan their paw found them. Billy Bob's explanation is cut short though as the ringleader throws a vat of hot grease on him. As Logan is burning to nothing but a skeleton, he slices the main Hulk's throat and he falls dead. Billy Bob freaks out and runs out the diner. He Hulk-jumps away and makes his escape.
BYEEEEEEE!

Back at the bunker, the old man rushes the kids out of the weapons bay while his goons load the missiles. Suddenly Billy Bob arrives and tells the old man what happened. He's outraged. As he rages into a massive green beast, he tells Billy Bob that because of his incompetence, they've lost four lives. He beats on him until a female hulk walks up and asks him to stop. He tells the others to keep packing trucks. Time is now essential.
She checks on Billy Bob, her brother, when later the old man tells her that if she ever defies him in public again, he'll kill both of them. The issue wraps with Logan recovering and putting on his jacket at the diner. He walks out past the dead bodies and has to tell himself to keep it together. Either way, it's a different ballgame now. He smelled it on them that there's more out there. And when he finds them, they're gonna wish they'd stayed in the hellhole they'd clawed themselves out of.
Oh now you're in BIG trouble!

Well done issue. I was concerned as this was a new creative team on this title but they not only held the mantle up, they didn't even reset the series. That in itself truly is a win in this new Marvel age. Ed Brisson and Mike Deodato prove themselves more than capable of pulling the weight this title deserves. If anything, this is actually higher caliber than the previous last couple of books. I'm really digging this storyline and can't wait to see where they take it. I give it a 9/10.

X-Men Gold #5

Written by Mark Guggenheim
Penciled by RB Silva
Cover by Ardian Syaf
Published Jun 7 2017

The Nano-Tech Sentinel stands atop the burning building and steps on a barely-hanging-on Gambit's hand. He falls and Storm catches him just in time. Nearby the X-Men bamf in and find Olivia Trask. Nightcrawler teleports her to the safety of the Blackbird while Logan claws his way into a burning building to assist some mismatched firefighters. He helps save some civilians while Kitty and her team prepare to fight.

I think it's speaking pig latin.

Kitty directs Colossus to deliver a fastball special, which is like the 10th time they've used this term since the super young series got off the ground. She phases into the being and scrambles the nanites. Just then Rachel is dealt a severe psychic blow and passes out, only to be revived on the plane.
She tells Kitty the sentinel is self-aware and Kitty mentions it might be vulnerable to a psych attack. Meanwhile on TV Lydia Nance uses the skyscraper's destruction as another brick against mutants. While the young X-Men watch from home, she further mentions Remy Lebeau as an accomplice.

I got a little cajun in me too. We're used to getting blamed for things.

Back on board the plane, the team gets Olivia talking. This was all caused by Gambit's meddling. As they continue flying, Nightcrawler sees the sentinel outside. Kitty phases through the jet's floor, but as Olivia explains - the AI in the machines learn. It blasts her just as the rest of the X-Men arrive.Gambit throws some cards and Storm attacks. But something's not right.
Kitty realizes the swarm is smaller this time. As she reports back, evidence of the swarm infesting the city filters in. They've dispersed. She asks Rachel for some psychic help which is delivered just in time. But it's at a cost. Rachel falls unconscious. And as Kurt mentions, their adversary is now city wide.
This issue wraps with Nightcrawler trying to figure out why it's targeting certain individuals. It doesn't make sense. Actually, Olivia says, it makes perfect sense. All of those being attacked suffer from various illnesses caused by genetic mutations. The sentinel is attacking everyone now and with that, we're left to be continued.

Doc Ock called. He wants his suit back.

It took about 4 issues or so, but we're finally reaching some levity. This book is starting to at least move from crawling to walking. The fights are starting to get better, without Kitty having to pretty much narrate everything that's happening. Bigger plot points. Thicker dialogue. It took some time but X-Men Gold is starting to deliver. They're maybe not hitting it out of the park yet but it's at least getting better with every issue. I give this one a series high 6/10.

Batman #24

Written by Tom King
Penciled by David Finch and Clay Mann
Cover by David Finch
Published Jun 7 2017

Tonight as the Catwoman suits up, the dialogue spoken between Batman and Gotham girl is displayed over the page. Earlier today, the two of them sit atop a antenna spire over the city. She asks Batman what's next. Her brother and her parents are all gone. As we see the cat leap from the window, Claire asks if she should be a superhero? Her brother was the one who longed for that. Should she go back to being normal? Batman asks what's normal? Could he go back to being normal and he says that no, he could not.
I'm a guy in a batsuit. What's normal?!

She says she thought he'd tell her to just go home and live life as long as she could. He mockingly tells her so but she again asks what's next? He tells her he doesn't know. After his parents died, he became Batman - against Alfred's wishes. She asks if he likes being Batman and he tells her it doesn't matter. Does she want to be a hero? He tells her he isn't happy being Batman. He just IS Batman. He tries to do it to be happy but he fails.
I'M A BIG BAT-FAILURE, CLAIRE!

She realizes she never said thank you for saving her. For the Psycho Pirate, Santa Prisca, Bane - all of it. He tells her he doesn't fly because he doesn't need to. So she decides that yes, she'll be a superhero. He tells her he knows a guy in Europe that will teach her to fight without powers. She asks him why can't he be happy and he tells her he's scared. She tells him it's ok. Everybody's scared. We get to fight that fear. We have the chance to be brave.
The issue takes a turn. Claire and Bruce's conversation trails off. It's not about what he wants to do. There he stands in the night rain and calls to the Cat. She gazes up at him. When he first met her on the boat... The street, she corrects him... but no. It was the boat. She'd stolen a diamond from him and he bought it back, only to hold onto it for years. He knew... even at the beginning. He'd need it - just like he needs her. He pulls his cowl back and tells her he's scared. There Bruce and Selina's eyes meet and he tells her he loves her. Holding the diamond set in a ring he'd been carrying for so long, he asks her to marry him. And with that, we're left to be continued.
Ok - this got me in the bat feels. Not gonna lie...

Amazing epilogue to the last few issues. Gotham Girl is healed and pondering her next move coupled with a Bat-Engagement?! If only Adam West were here to see it. I don't really understand why this book took 2 teams of pencilers and inkers but I mean, it IS summer and they want to put a new issue out every 30 seconds. Either way, I'll allow it. Layered and beautiful artwork paired with great dialogue. What's not to love? I give it a super-as-usual bat 10/10.

Daredevil #21

Written by Charles Soule
Penciled by Goran Sudzuka
Cover by Dan Panosian
Published Jun 7 2017

After getting back to New York after a longterm stay in San Francisco, Daredevil's plan to rid the city of crime is coming to fruition. After a smelly garbage truck passes by, he listens into a conversation. A doomsday prepper group prepares for an assault on the city. Daredevil radios Luke Cage, and tells him that apparently the deal this gang had worked with the Black Cat has yielded some high-tech firepower. Luke kicks in the door, and stares down the barrels of some pretty big guns. They shoot and one of the bad guys recognizes him. But while he may have bulletproof skin, even he can't take this kind of heat for too long.
Ow. That hurts.

Flashback to the DA's office earlier. Matt Murdock presents a plan to tie costumed super villains directly to the state's criminal justice system. Although it can have a detrimental effects on heroes as well, but Matt tells him it's a risk they're willing to take. He's spoken with Daredevil who is also on board. Handing the binder back to the attorney, he asks how all this info was compiled. But while Murdock's mind pines over the adventures with Spider-Man on how he came by it all, the DA realizes he'd rather not know. Only order he has is whatever happens, keep it quiet.
Matt's strategy for not telling where he got his info is just to not say anything...

Daredevil leaps from the rooftop. Determined not to let Luke fight alone, he's joined by a secret weapon. Echo and Daredevil engage in a near dance and she lets him lead. Only problem is he misses a step but luckily Luke gets a punch in on the guy. He compliments Echo but wondering why Daredevil has to explain it, he later learns she's deaf. Daredevil asks the head perp Ammo if they were gonna really end the world and he tells him they were just the diversion. The Big Bang is still coming...
Big Bang Theory is on?!?!

Daredevil realizes that initial garbage truck seemed out of place. They take off to find it and following his nose, they track it to right outside the courthouse about three minutes before the things about to blow. They stop the driver and after finding out he can't disarm it, Daredevil tells Luke to get in the truck with him. That's the bomb. They leap in and drive it towards the bridge. Once they're safely at the top of it, Luke steers it into the guardrail and Daredevil pulls him out the passenger door. The truck careens off the bridge and explodes out of harm's way.
At his office the next day, the District Attorney asks what happened to the quiet surveillance mission? Murdock tells him that without Daredevil doing what he did, hundreds of people would have been killed. Now he has to build a case around the truck driver. The next day, a witness is called to the stand to testify. As he's sworn in, Matt thinks to himself that this is it. This is the end of the crime in New York. The issue wraps by showing whom it was on the stand being called and there stands Daredevil. The whole truth. So help him God. And with that we're left to be continued.
Best dressed attorney EVAR!

I'm not sure where Ron Garney is, but Goran Sudzuku does a good job paying homage. Still with minimalist colors, the book makes easy work for the inker and all the while is fortified with some excellent storytelling. I enjoyed the whole Purple Children saga and this continues fresh off it's heels. Even with one of DD's Defenders teammates in tow, it's all solid the whole way through. Charles Soule is still able to focus on a simple story still layered without having to go in too many different directions. Daredevil is like Batman. You know what you're gonna get. I give this one a 9/10.

All New Guardians of the Galaxy #3

Written by Gerry Duggan
Penciled by Frazer Irving
Cover by Aaron Kuder
Published Jun 7 2017

The issue starts off recapping some of the events in Gamora's life. Abandoned and later retrained by Thanos, he turned her loose on the galaxy. She later attacked him but failed to kill him. Then Adam Warlock saved her by putting her soul into the soul stone. Still, the easy life didn't fit for the young warrior, and she left the stone to fight with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Real World: Soul Stone Edition

Now the dream continues. She asks the old woman why she's there, and it's revealed she wants to show her something. As they walk they encounter Adam Warlock and Phyla-Vell fighting mirror images of one another. She interferes and Adam thanks her for the assist. She asks how he returned to life and he tells her he's always been there. Suddenly the old woman grabs her and tells her they must flee. Their battle hasn't gone unnoticed. Flying overhead, some kind of soul demon passes them. Gamora tells the old woman she needs to be getting back to her friends when she's told that part of her never left.
Wait - I thought this was soul TRAIN! Not Stone... Crap.

Adam saved her by bringing her to the soul stone but some of it was left behind when she left it. The old woman is a future version of Gamora, and by taking out her eyes, she's broken part of the spell. Gamora asks how they can find a way out and she awakes from her nap... slowly being brought back into the realm where Rocket and Groot are.
Rocket is repairing the massive Galactus trojan horse they've been using when he asks her what she plans to do following the grandmaster job. She says she plans to find the soul stone... a plan that Rocket and Groot clearly see as suicidal. But with that, we're left to be continued.

Frazer Irving was working so hard on this awesome art, he forgot to draw Gamora's body.

So ok... what the hell was this? A dream that kind of sheds a little light on one of the more mysterious members of the crew. I'll give it that. Gamora is still partially stuck in the soul stone and sees torturous imagery of what she left there. Other than that, I couldn't understand what was going on. Adam Warlock.. fighting some dude? I dunno. Either way, I'll give the story a C but this artwork was terrible. It reminds me of that horrendous Mike Del Mundo was doing for the first few issues of Avengers and it's just horrible. I don't know what it's gonna take to get Aaron Kuder back but hopefully it happens sooner than later. Other than that, I give this one a 5/10.

Justice League #22

Written by Shea Fontana
Penciled by Philippe Briones
Cover by Paul Pelletier
Published Jun 7, 2017

Simon and Jess roll out with their lantern powers to deflect an asteroid away from Earth. Once complete, Jess complains that both Wonder Woman and Batman seem to look right past her. He said it takes time and they make their way back to the Watchtower for their interview. Before they arrive, Lois Lane wraps with Wonder Woman as Superman remarks he can't believe her editor allowed her to write puff piece on their HQ.
Great. More Jon.

The lanterns return triumphant and Simon high fives Jon-El. He later gets a grown up handshake from Batman but the laid back attitude is short lived. Cyborg reads millions of microscopic organisms on the two lanterns while Jessica understandably freaks out. They pick up the signals all over the Watchtower. A conference call with both Aquaman and Flash nixes a reentry with Earth until more is known and therefore, these heroes are officially quarantined.
Lock us down, Batman.

Superman, Batman, and Lois all head for the computers to research, when Lois hits on something. A spieces of krill found in Antarctica has similar behavioral tendencies. Meanwhile the Lanterns take the blame hard. Baz throws a chair before being summoned by Wonder Woman, and same for Jess while taking a shower. Cyborg has a heart to heart with Jon and bond over some gaming while we later find out just what Wonder Woman wanted with the lanterns. A training session gets hard and heavy and the two earn some respect from the long term member of the league - but not without a painful lesson. Suddenly and without warning, the microorganisms swarm through the vents and surround them.
Couldn't it possibly Wonder Woman too? I mean, she's a movie star now!

The three of them fight back as well as they can when the rest of the team reports thanks to a distress signal. The swarm forms the shape of a young woman and Lois notices Queen-seeking behavior. As the mass moves towards Jessica they realize it's emulating her. Keeping her away from them only seems to anger them so Batman and Superman convince her to relax and control them. She does so, and they're able to goad her into a large holding cell Simon makes with lantern energy...
My ant farm USED to be that cool. ok...not really.

Later they locate the Queen on Jess and she contains it in a lantern tube. They bring the mass to a nearby asteroid and let the Queen go on it. Removing the force field frees the colony and they follow her. When they get back to the tower, Wonder Woman tells them they did well. Jessica thanks her for training them and she says she was training WITH them. They're both overjoyed, prompting Jess to fly outside the Watchtower jubilantly... and with that, this one shot is concluded.
The last issue of Batman I read was a well needed one shot, and I commented how it's rare and such a breath of fresh air. Then low and behold the very next Justice League is the same way. This was a good story and it all felt perfectly spaced and natural in one book. I don't know if Shea Fontana is here to stay but if Bryan Hitch just needed a break, they picked someone who could certainly carry his torch. Nothing really gained but nothing really lost either.... I give this one a 8/10.
